Brockville - Born in 2009 and debuting at Riverfest last year, 1000 Islands DockDogs will be "Rockin' The Dock" again this year at Riverfest 2010 July 1st - 4th at Blockhouse Island in Brockville. This year is proving to be even bigger and better than ever with more than 143 already competitors preregistered in comparison to last year when we had only 5 preregistered.
This year will include the addition of special Canada Day ribbons and prizes, on site professional photography & printing, a caricature artist, a professional DockDogs announcer, Expose playing live on our dock, doggie massage, amazing vendors, great raffles, prize money for the finalists on Sunday and many other exciting things. We are expecting competitors from Pennsylvania, Vermont, New York State, London, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec, as well as any local people.
You don't want to miss 1000 Islands DockDogs at Riverfest. It's an event that is guaranteed to amaze you with a lot of spectacular jumping dogs, seasoned dogs reaching distances of over 25', over 7' high, or swimming to the end of the pool in less than 5 seconds, and the always special ‘newbies’ making their DockDogs debut.
A typical 1000 Islands DockDogs event consists of a dog, their handler, a 40 foot dock, a 40 foot pool of water and a team of people helping and encouraging you to give it a try and compete in one, or all 3 disciplines of DockDogs - Big Air, Extreme Vertical and Speed Retrieve.
The most popular discipline is Big Air (BA) which is the long jump equivalent for canine athletes. Big Air dogs catapult themselves off the end of the 40-foot dock into a 28,000-gallon pool of water to retrieve their favourite float-able toy.
Extreme Vertical (EV) was introduced in 2005 and is the high jump portion of a DockDogs event. In this event, the dog launches upward and tries to grab or knock down a bumper which is suspended over the water from rigging which is set 8' out from the edge of the dock.
Finally there is Speed Retrieve (SR) is the speed element - similar to drag racing for dogs except the dog races against the clock not a competitor. It was introduced at the DockDogs World Championships in 2008 and involves a run.....jump.....and swim for the duck.
Many people inquire about training...1000 Islands DockDogs is very proud to have Heather McLeod as an official DockDogs trainer and as part of our team, she will be offering seminars, one-on-one training and tips, both on and off the dock. Heather is also the proud owner of "DIESEL" Canada's 1st SUPER ELITE DockDog, jumping 25' 11" and was named the top Ranked Border Collie Worldwide for 2 consecutive years.
We promise to always have someone available to answer any and all questions, or help participants in any way.
