Vancouver: Canada’s dog-friendly city

From:HappyDoggieBlog

"The City of Vancouver is probably the most dog-friendly city in Canada. While recently there visiting family, we saw dogs everywhere and there must be a dog business or store on every street corner. Vancouverites just love their canine friends!

We were surprised to see that not only were dog bags provided in ALL their dog parks (or at least most of them), there are even dog bag stations in the parking lots of shopping malls! We saw folks using the stations (like this one shown in the photo) while walking their dogs through the parking lot of a Chapter’s mall in South Vancouver.

It was also great to see that these doggie bags are biodegradable, which is definately an environmentally-friendly way to collect dog waste.

The City of Vancouver has put these biodegradable bag stations beside their public garbage cans throughout all the city’s streets. This not only encourages people to clean up after their dog (esp for those who forget a bag when they head out for a walk), they also help reduce the number of plastic grocery bags that many dog owners use to clean up after their pal…(more)

Although some of the parks here in Ottawa have bag stations near the entrance to trails (but nowhere near as fancy as these in Vancouver), they are definately few and far between in our city.

Hopefully many Canadian cities, including Ottawa, will soon follow Vancouver’s example and become more dog-friendly and offer similar services to help keep our cities green and clean."
