Several agility workshops with

Dave Munnings

Held at Tamsu Learning Center, Totthenham ON

June 19-22, 2009

Dave Munnings currently is one of top handlers in the UK and owns the current top dog in the country, Dobby!

Dobby won into grade 7 (UK's highest grade) within a year of competing. He also won his first championship class he was eligible for (To earn an Agility Champion Title you have to win 3 of these in the UK). He went on to win the Championship class at Crufts, which automatically made him an Agility Champion. He qualified to compete at the European Opens in 2008 in Germany. He won the connection final in 2008 and the Dogs in Need Week final. He won his semi final qualifying him to compete at Olympia in 2008. He won the Olympia final in 2008 (youngest dog to win this)and beat the competition by a fullsecond. He has also won another 2 tickets since gaining Agility Champion status so now has 5 tickets in total. He has already achieved in his 4 years what most dogs achieve in their life time.

Notonly has Dave achieved success with his new dog Dobby. Dave also has an older Dog named Billy. Dave didn't get Billy until he was 4 years old and had a huge task of completely retraining him. Billy won into Grade 7 within 6 months of competing. Within the next 4 years Dave and Billy competed in every final in the UK winning many 2nd places. He achieved Agility Champion status when he was 8 years old which is a huge honor since there are only 10 agility champions in the UK. Dave and Billy also qualified for the FCI world championship team in 2005 and 2006 taking home the individual bronze medal in 2005. He was part of the winning team at Crufts in 2008 at 10 years old and will be competing there again this year. Dave is working on his new dog Nala who I am sure we will hear great things about in the near future.

Dave's TrainingMethods are extremely motivational and very rewarding. He uses toys/ treats/whatever the dog finds most rewarding. He has endless patience with dogs and people and wants the handlers to really understand whatthey areteaching and to not just copy what he does. He wants people to learn and not just imitate. He trains the dog and the handler not just one or the other. Now for all those people that think Dave is only good because he is young and can run, you’re wrong. Just because he can run fast doesn't mean that’s howhe trains. Most peoplehe teaches cannot keep up with their dogs; soDave has many techniques for handler to be able to workefficiently from behind and from in front. Dave is very adaptable and doesn’t believein a cookie cutter way of training or a 1 size fits all. Each handler and dog team are unique and he is confident that he can improve youroverall performance!
Dave firmly believes that Agility is for the dogs to enjoy and he says "My dogs are not machines, they have fun and enjoy what they do.”

Dave alsohas a degree in human Osteopathy (Bsc (Hons)) after a 4 year course at the European School of Osteopathy and isin the middle ofhis equine and canine course and will be qualified in July this year.

This might be of particular interest to anyone who competes in any athletic dog sport.

Dave did hisdissertation on warming up dogs before agility.

Week 1, Dave took 30 dogs andhad them all do atheir regular warm up routine and thentimed them all on a straight line of 4 jumpsover a distance of 17 meters.
Week 2, He separated the dogs into 2 groups of 15. Group 1, had an osteopathic warm up and Group 2 did their regular warm up. Every dog in Group 1 had a significantly faster time, some as much as0.6 seconds. This could save many seconds over an entire course.

Dave Says'
"Warming up your dog properly will increase performance and decrease injury. The warm up will increase circulation, by increasing heart rate and decreasing tension in muscles allowing the blood to flow more freely. Increased blood supply will increase oxygen and therefore energy to muscles as it will allow increased respiration. Decreasing muscle tension will also allow the muscles to stretch more and so be more resilient to injuries."

In his lecture Dave will be extensive about warming up your dogs and showing us exercises to properly and effectively prepare your dog for a run.

I have attached some You tube Videos of Dave and Dobby running some courses that I think will speak for themselves.

After speaking with Dave extensively over the past few weeks, I am really excited about the fresh ideas he brings to the sharing table.
