IFSS will be tabling proposals for rule changes for the 2009 World Dryland Championships

From: Mushing Canada

The rigs commonly used by North American mushers do not meet the requirements as defined by the IFSS dryland racing rules. IFSS will be tabling proposals for rule changes that would permit the use of North American style rigs but, in the mean time, special accommodations will definitely be made for the 2009 championship event. The following information was received from IFSS regarding rule accommodations for the 2009 World Dryland Championships in Saguenay, QC.

[There will be] an exception this year to allow 3-wheel rigs in 6 and 8-dog classes at the World Championships Dryland in Saguenay (Canada). If North American rigs only have brakes on the rear wheels, an exception [will be made] for that too. But the race Marshal will be very attentive at checking the quality of the rigs including the well functioning of the braking system.

There is no need for an exception for the weight of the rigs since the rule is only a recommendation.

The locking brake is mandatory. A locking foot brake is alright. For the rigs having regular bicycle brakes with no locking brake installed, there is an easy way of making them: A piece of Velcro around the brake handle which can hold the brake handle in the braking position when the competitor removes his/her hand from the brake handle will do it.
